Correct piston-ring selection is essential when rebuilding a Mercury Racing 2.5L V6 two-stroke. The required ring depends on the Wizard piston size and the cylinder’s running surface.

Nikasil-plated cylinders and steel or cast-iron sleeves require different ring-face materials, and installing the wrong ring can result in poor sealing, accelerated cylinder wear or premature ring failure.

Buckshot Racing #77 offers four replacement ring options for compatible Wizard Race Shop top-pinned, two-ring pistons. Gold Titanium Nitride rings are intended for Nikasil-plated cylinders, while silver hard-chrome rings are designed for steel or cast-iron sleeves. Both materials are available for standard-bore and 0.030-inch oversize Wizard pistons.

Each package contains two piston rings, enough to service one compatible two-ring Wizard piston. A complete six-cylinder Mercury 2.5L V6 requires six packages, for a total of twelve rings.

1. Gold Titanium Nitride Rings — Standard Nikasil Bore

The Wizard Titanium Nitride Gold Standard Piston Ring Set contains two rings for one standard-size Wizard top-pinned piston operating in a properly finished Nikasil-plated cylinder.

Titanium Nitride, commonly abbreviated TiN, is a hard, wear-resistant coating with a distinctive gold appearance. It is selected for compatibility with nickel-silicon-carbide cylinder surfaces and provides controlled friction, dependable sealing and strong wear resistance in high-RPM two-stroke operation.

This option is intended only for standard-size Wizard pistons and standard-bore Nikasil cylinders that remain within the piston manufacturer’s required bore diameter and piston-to-wall clearance.

2. Gold Titanium Nitride Rings — 0.030-Inch Oversize Nikasil Bore

The Wizard Titanium Nitride Gold 0.030-Over Piston Ring Set contains two rings for one Wizard top-pinned piston manufactured for a cylinder enlarged by 0.030 inch.

This option is designed for a Mercury Racing 2.5L cylinder that has been correctly machined, finished and replated for the matching 0.030-inch oversize Wizard piston. These rings must not be installed on a standard-size piston or used in a standard-bore cylinder.

Before assembly, confirm the actual piston diameter, finished cylinder size, piston clearance and ring end gap.

3. Silver Hard-Chrome Rings — Standard Steel-Sleeve Bore

The Wizard Hard-Chrome Silver Standard Piston Ring Set contains two rings for one standard-size Wizard top-pinned piston operating in a steel or cast-iron cylinder sleeve.

Hard chrome provides a durable running surface suited to the friction, honing pattern and oil-retention characteristics of an iron-based sleeve. This ring is commonly used when an original Nikasil Mercury Racing block has been repaired with a standard-bore steel sleeve or converted to a complete steel-sleeve configuration.

This option is not intended for Nikasil-plated cylinders.

4. Silver Hard-Chrome Rings — 0.030-Inch Oversize Steel-Sleeve Bore

The Wizard Hard-Chrome Silver 0.030-Over Piston Ring Set contains two rings for one Wizard top-pinned piston manufactured for a steel or cast-iron sleeve bored 0.030 inch oversize.

The sleeve must be machined and honed to the correct finished diameter, piston-to-wall clearance and surface finish for the matching Wizard piston. Final ring end gap must be checked in the actual cylinder before installation.

This ring set is intended only for a 0.030-inch oversize steel-sleeve application and should not be substituted for a standard ring set or used in a Nikasil bore.

Mercury Racing 2.5L Applications

These replacement rings are intended for compatible Wizard top-pinned pistons used in Mercury Racing 2.5L V6 outboards, including many 245 Carb, 260 EFI, 280 ROS, 300 Drag and S3000 powerheads, along with custom-built 2.5L racing and high-performance engines.

Fitment cannot be determined by engine model alone. Many Mercury Racing blocks have been replated, bored oversize or repaired with steel sleeves during previous rebuilds.

A 260 EFI, 280 ROS or 300 Drag block may contain original Nikasil cylinders, replacement steel sleeves or a combination of both. Ring material must therefore be matched to the actual running surface of each cylinder.

Before ordering, verify that the piston is a compatible Wizard top-pinned, two-ring design, determine whether it is standard or 0.030 inch oversize, and identify whether the cylinder is Nikasil plated or steel sleeved. Inspect the ring grooves, cylinder finish, bore diameter and port edges, then measure each ring’s end gap in its intended cylinder before final assembly.

Choosing the correct Wizard Mercury 2.5L piston rings ensures the piston size, ring coating and cylinder material function together as a matched system. Use gold Titanium Nitride rings for Nikasil cylinders and silver hard-chrome rings for steel or cast-iron sleeves, selecting the standard or 0.030-inch oversize version according to the actual piston and finished bore.
