This unit comes fully assembled with bearing and prop shaft seals, ready for installation in high-performance or stock gearcase builds. It supports applications requiring Mercury 1" propshaft compatibility and is ideal for those rebuilding or upgrading their Mercury lower units.
Unlike factory carriers, the Buckshot Racing #77 features a machined drain passage and threaded stainless magnetic drain plug, allowing gear oil to be drained from the rear of the gearcase.
This feature is particularly beneficial when installing a nose cone or shaping the lower unit for hydrodynamic efficiency and improved high-speed performance, critical for competitive outboard racing or high-performance marine applications.
The integrated magnetic drain plug offers an easy way to monitor gearcase health during routine oil changes. To inspect, simply rub any collected material between your fingers—if it dissolves easily, it's likely normal clutch or friction material.
However, if the debris feels hard or sharp, it may indicate gear or bearing wear. In this case, refill with fresh gear lube and monitor closely. If metallic particles persist, a full gearcase teardown and inspection may be necessary to prevent further damage.
