The Sierra / CDI Electronics 214-7778K 2 Quick Strike Ignition Kit is Made in the USA, also searched as 214-7778-K2, 18-99337, and CDI Quick Strike Mercury ignition kit, is a complete ignition upgrade for select Mercury, Mariner, Mercury Racing, and Mercury Hi-Performance V6 2-stroke outboards using the 16-amp ADI / CDI ignition system.

 

This kit is designed for many 9 and 16-amp 135 HP, 150 HP, 175 HP, 200 HP, 220 HP, 225 HP, 245 HP, 260 HP, 280 HP, and 300 HP Mercury V6 engines built from the classic late-1970s era through early-2000s high-performance platforms. Common applications include Black Max, XR2, XR4, XR6, Magnum, Laser EFI, XRi, carbureted V6, EFI, Pro Max 200, Pro Max 225, 245 Carb, 260 EFI, 280 ROS, S3000, SST-style engines, and 300 Drag outboards equipped with compatible 16-amp ignition components.

 

Because Mercury used multiple ignition systems across different years and serial ranges, always confirm the engine uses a 16-amp system before ordering. This kit will not work with 40-amp flywheels.

 

What Comes in the Quick Strike Kit?

 

The 214-7778K 2 / 18-99337 kit is built around CDI’s performance ignition components and typically includes two (2) CDI 214-7778-R2 switch boxes, one (1) 274-5456-S15 stator, and one (1) 134-6456 trigger.

 

Together, these parts replace the major ignition-control components that commonly age, weaken, or become inconsistent on classic Mercury V6 2-stroke outboards.

 

The switch boxes replace many Mercury OEM switch box numbers, including 332-7778A2, 332-7778A4, 332-7778A6, and 332-7778A14.

 

The trigger is commonly associated with Mercury trigger families such as 96455A10, 96455A11, and related 96455-series V6 triggers.

 

The stator is commonly used as an upgrade or replacement for compatible Mercury 16-amp stator applications, including A36-style ignition systems where fitment matches the engine’s flywheel and harness configuration.

 

Why Quick Strike Ignition Matters

 

At high RPM, ignition accuracy becomes critical. Older Mercury switch boxes can develop timing drift, weak output, intermittent firing, or heat-related failure. On performance engines that regularly operate 7,000 to 10,000+ RPM, even small ignition inconsistencies can show up as poor throttle response, rough running, spark fade, misfire, plug fouling, or lost top-end power.

 

The CDI Quick Strike system is engineered to provide faster spark response and more stable timing control than worn original equipment components. Stronger, cleaner ignition helps improve combustion quality, especially under full throttle, high-load, and elevated RPM conditions where Mercury Racing and Hi-Performance V6 engines are most demanding.

 

Stable Stator Output and Trigger Accuracy

 

The included 274-5456-S15 stator supplies the ignition system with clean AC voltage for reliable switch box operation. A weak or failing stator can cause hard starting, poor idle, intermittent spark loss, or RPM-related ignition breakdown. Replacing the stator as part of a complete kit helps eliminate one of the most common causes of Mercury V6 ignition problems.

 

The 134-6456 trigger reads crankshaft position from the flywheel and sends timing signals to the switch boxes. Accurate trigger output is essential because the switch boxes rely on this signal to fire each cylinder at the correct moment. On a six-cylinder Mercury 2-stroke, clean trigger signals are especially important for smooth idle, crisp acceleration, and safe high-RPM operation.

 

Installation and Service Notes

 

Installation should be performed by someone familiar with Mercury V6 ignition systems. Before installing the kit, inspect the flywheel magnets, engine grounds, battery cables, harness connectors, coil wiring, kill circuit, and regulator/rectifier wiring. Poor grounds, corroded terminals, and damaged harnesses can shorten the life of new ignition parts.

 

A DVA meter or peak-reading adapter should be used to verify stator and trigger output during diagnosis.

 

After installation, ignition timing must be checked and set according to the correct Mercury service manual before the engine is run hard. This is especially important on Pro Max, 245, 260 EFI, 280, S3000, and 300 Drag applications where timing accuracy directly affects piston safety and engine life.

 

Buckshot Racing #77 Tech Tip

 

Do not mix old, failing ignition parts with new performance components without testing the full system.

A bad ground, weak battery cable, failing coil, damaged flywheel magnet, or shorted kill wire can make a new switch box, stator, or trigger appear defective.

 

On high-performance Mercury V6 engines, the best results come from treating ignition service as a complete system repair, not a one-part replacement.
