The Mercury 8M0214939 Driveshaft Oil Seal is the correct OEM replacement seal for compatible 3.0L Mercury and Mercury Racing SportMaster driveshaft seal carriers, including the earlier 840836A2 carrier assembly and its current replacement, 8M0192207. Mercury parts diagrams list 8M0214939 as the current replacement for the earlier 66302 oil seal.

This is the seal used in the Buckshot Racing #77 Billet Driveshaft Seal Carrier designed around the Mercury 840836-style carrier configuration. It is intended for builders and service technicians who want to retain genuine Mercury sealing components while upgrading the carrier itself to a billet replacement.

What the Driveshaft Seal Does

The driveshaft seal sits inside the upper driveshaft carrier beneath the water-pump assembly. Its job is to keep gear lubricant inside the gearcase while helping prevent water and contaminants from entering around the driveshaft.

On compatible SportMaster gearcases, Mercury uses two 8M0214939 oil seals in the carrier assembly, positioned as a seal pair. Current Mercury parts diagrams show two seals, item numbers 30 and 31, in conjunction with the 8M0192207 carrier kit, which supersedes 840836A2.

That two-seal arrangement is important. When rebuilding the carrier, both seals should be inspected and are generally best replaced together rather than servicing only one.

Mercury 840836 / 840836A2 Carrier Applications

The 840836A2 driveshaft seal carrier was used on selected 3.0L Mercury and Mercury Racing gearcases before being superseded by 8M0192207. Mercury parts listings show the 840836A2-style carrier and 8M0214939 seal on applications including 250XB 3.0L EFI, as well as later SportMaster gearcases.

SportMaster parts diagrams also show this seal arrangement on performance applications such as the 225 Sport XS 3.0L and 250XS 3.0L DFI Optimax, including standard and counter-rotation SportMaster gearcases where the same carrier is specified.

Because Mercury used different seal-carrier designs across 3.0L and 3.2L gearcases, fitment should be confirmed by the existing carrier number, gearcase serial number, or original seal number rather than horsepower alone.

Genuine Mercury OEM Seal

This is a Genuine Mercury OEM seal, not an aftermarket substitute.

The current Mercury part number is: 8M0214939, Earlier Mercury number:

66302.

Mercury catalogs the part as an oil seal / carrier oil seal for the driveshaft carrier.

For builders using the Buckshot Racing #77 billet carrier, retaining the Mercury OEM seal provides a known sealing component designed around the original shaft diameter and carrier geometry.

Why Seal Condition Matters

A worn or damaged driveshaft seal can allow gear oil to escape or water to enter the lower unit. Even a small amount of water contamination can reduce the lubricating ability of the gear oil and accelerate wear on bearings, gears, and shafts.

Common signs of seal problems include milky gear lubricant, unexplained gear-oil loss, water in the lower unit, visible seal-lip damage, corrosion around the driveshaft, or leakage during pressure and vacuum testing.

Any time the water pump or driveshaft carrier is removed, the seals should be inspected carefully.

Buckshot Racing #77 Installation Tech Tip

When installing new 8M0214939 seals into the billet or OEM carrier, inspect the driveshaft sealing surface first. A new seal cannot correct a shaft that is deeply grooved, pitted, rusted, or damaged.

Lubricate the seal lips with clean gear lubricant before installation, install the seals squarely, and maintain the correct orientation specified by the Mercury service manual for the exact gearcase.

Also inspect the carrier O-ring. Current SportMaster diagrams pair the carrier with Mercury O-ring 8M0142854, which supersedes earlier 90011 / 896523 references.

After assembly, pressure- and vacuum-test the gearcase before returning it to service.

The Mercury OEM 8M0214939 Driveshaft Seal is the correct service seal for compatible 840836A2 and 8M0192207 driveshaft seal carriers, including the Buckshot Racing #77 billet replacement carrier for selected Mercury 3.0L SportMaster gearcases.
