The Buckshot Racing #77 Mercury 16-Pin ECU Harness Coupling Ring is an OEM-equivalent replacement for Mercury 19049 / 190491, the locking ring used to secure the EFI engine harness connector to the ECU on many classic Mercury Marine, Mariner, and Mercury Racing 2.0L, 2.4L, and 2.5 Liter V6 two-stroke EFI outboards.

 

This small component performs an important job. The coupling ring keeps the 16-pin connector fully seated against the ECU despite engine vibration, heat cycling, and repeated service. Original connector nuts can become brittle, crack, or lose their locking ability after decades of use. A damaged ring can let an otherwise good connector loosen and cause intermittent EFI or fuel-system problems.

 

Mercury 2.0L, 2.4L & 2.5L EFI Applications

 

The 19049 / 190491 coupling ring was used across a broad range of Mercury V6 EFI engines rather than one specific horsepower or model.

 

Compatible applications include many Mercury V-150 HP, V-175 HP, and V-200 HP EFI engines, along with V-150 XRI, V-175 XRI, V-200 XRI, 200 XRI, and Laser EFI configurations.

 

The same 16-pin connector architecture is found on many Mariner high-performance EFI models, including V-150 MAG, V-175 MAG, V-175 SKI, V-175 XRI, V-200 MAG and V-200 XRI applications.

 

The earlier Mercury V-220 Laser 2.4L EFI also belongs to this important family of front-injected Mercury V6 engines.

 

On the 2.5L platform, the coupling ring is used on compatible 150 HP Pro Max / Super Mag, 200 EFI Pro Max / Super Mag, and 225 EFI Pro Max / Super Mag outboards.

 

Mercury Racing applications using related 16-pin EFI harness systems include 2.4 Liter Bridgeport, 260 EFI, 280 ROS, 2.5 Liter Offshore, Formula One (F1H20), S3000, and other high-performance EFI configurations equipped with the corresponding connector and harness.

 

Because many older Mercury engines have been rebuilt, converted, or fitted with different ECU systems, final fitment should be verified by the existing 16-pin connector and harness configuration, not the engine decal alone.

 

98866-Series Mercury EFI Harnesses

 

The coupling ring is associated with Mercury’s well-known 98866-series ECU and injector harness family. Common harness references include 98866, 98866A9, 98866A14, 98866A25, 98866A26, and 98866A27, along with related high-performance harness references such as 454-9602.

 

Mercury changed harness revisions during production, so the complete harness part number matters when replacing an entire wiring assembly. The 19049 / 190491 coupling ring, however, services the compatible connector shell used on these 16-pin systems.

 

What the 16-Pin ECU Connector Does

 

On classic Mercury EFI engines, the 16-pin connection carries critical electrical circuits between the engine harness and ECU. Depending on the exact engine and harness, these can include injector circuits, ECU power and grounds, sensor inputs, fuel-pump control, and other EFI-related signals.

 

Many Laser EFI, XRI, and Pro Max-era engines still use separate trigger, switchbox, and ignition-coil systems. The EFI ECU does not automatically control every ignition function simply because the engine has electronic fuel injection.

 

That distinction is useful during troubleshooting. A loose ECU connector can create fuel-injection or fuel-pump symptoms, but a no-spark condition should still be diagnosed through the appropriate stator, trigger, switchbox, coil, and kill-circuit testing.

 

Why Replace the Original Coupling Ring?

 

The original plastic connector nut operates in a harsh environment surrounded by heat, vibration, fuel vapor, and moisture. After years of service, especially on older gray connector rings, the plastic can become brittle.

 

Cracks around the retaining tabs may allow the nut to turn without pulling the connector securely into the ECU. In severe cases, sections of the ring break away completely.

 

Replacing a questionable coupling ring is inexpensive compared with troubleshooting an intermittent EFI problem caused by a connector that is not fully seated.

 

The replacement ring also outlasts many of the earlier aging gray connector nuts commonly found on older Mercury EFI harnesses.

 

Installation

 

Disconnect battery power before working on the ECU connector. Remove the damaged ring and inspect the complete 16-pin connection for bent pins, recessed terminals, corrosion, heat damage, loose sockets, or cracks in the connector shell.

 

Install the replacement coupling ring onto the connector body and make sure the internal retaining sections engage correctly.

 

Align the ECU connector before tightening the ring. The coupling nut should pull an already aligned connector together—it should never be used to force a misaligned plug onto the ECU.

 

Tighten the coupling ring by hand until the connector is properly seated and secure.

 

Important Dielectric Grease Tech Note

 

Buckshot Racing #77 recommends that the metal electrical contacts in these Mercury high-performance 16-pin EFI connectors remain clean and dry.

 

Mercury Hi-Performance guidance for these older EFI systems warned against putting dielectric grease directly on the connector terminals because an insulating film can interfere with electrical contact, particularly in circuits carrying higher current such as the fuel-pump circuit.

 

Dielectric grease can be appropriate on certain boots or seals where specified, but it should not be packed onto the metal pins and terminals of this ECU connection.

If a classic Mercury EFI outboard develops an intermittent problem immediately after the ECU or engine harness has been disconnected, inspect the 16-pin connector and coupling ring before replacing expensive electronics.

 

On a V-150, V-175, V-200, XRI, 200 XRI, Laser EFI, V-220 Laser, 150 Pro Max, 200 Pro Max, 225 Pro Max, Super Mag, 260 EFI, 280 ROS, Formula I or S3000, a cracked coupling ring can prevent a good harness from remaining fully engaged.
