The engine-side wiring harness (Mercury OEM Part Number 96220) is the critical electrical link between your outboard engine and the boat’s control system. This 8-pin harness connects the ignition, charging, and monitoring circuits of the engine to the dashboard harness, allowing the key switch, gauges, warning systems, and starter circuit to operate correctly.

At Buckshot Racing #77, we now offer two replacement options for this important component so owners can choose the configuration that best suits their application.

Customers can select either the Buckshot Racing #77 Engine-Side Harness ($149) or the Sierra / CDI Electronics Engine-Side Harness ($229). Both are direct replacements for the Mercury OEM 96220 harness used on many legacy Mercury 2-stroke V6 outboards.

Two (2) Harness Options Available

1) The Buckshot Racing #77 Engine-Side Harness is a non-fused design, closely matching the traditional Mercury harness layout. This version provides a clean, straightforward replacement for engines where a fuse is not required in the harness itself and is commonly used in many performance and racing setups.

2) The Sierra / CDI Electronics harness is a fused version, easily identified by the yellow fuse holder cover integrated into the harness. This design adds additional circuit protection within the wiring system, making it a popular choice for recreational boats and engines where additional electrical protection is desired.

Both harnesses are built to replace the original Mercury wiring harness while maintaining proper compatibility with the factory 8-pin engine-to-boat connector system.

Compatible Mercury 2-Stroke V6 Outboards

These engine-side harnesses fit a wide range of Mercury Marine, Mariner, and Mercury Racing 2-stroke V6 outboards built from the late 1970s through the early 2000s.

They are commonly used on engines including 135 HP, 150 HP, 175 HP, 200 HP, 220 Laser EFI, and 225 HP models, as well as well-known performance platforms such as Black Max, XRI, XR2, XR4, XR6, 200 Pro Max, 225 Pro Max, and other EFI and carbureted engines.

The harness also supports many Mercury Racing applications, including 245 Carb, 260 EFI, 280 ROS, S3000, SST-120, and 300 Drag engines.

These engines span the 2.0-liter, 2.4-liter, and 2.5-liter Mercury V6 platforms, making the 96220 harness one of the most common electrical service components on legacy Mercury outboards used in bass boats, offshore performance boats, and racing applications.

Replacement and Cross-Reference Part Numbers

Both harness options replace several Mercury OEM harness numbers used across multiple production years.

The primary Mercury part number is 96220, with common variants including 96220A2, 96220A4, 96220A7, 96220A12, 96220A13, 96220A16, and 96220A17, along with the related harness 87266A1.

The Sierra / CDI Electronics versions correspond to CDI part numbers 84-96220A4, 84-96220A12, and 84-96220A16, commonly referenced as 6220A4 and 6220A12.

Because these harnesses were used across many Mercury V6 engines, they remain one of the most widely replaced wiring components on legacy two-stroke outboards.

Key Electrical Connections Supported by the Harness

The engine-side harness carries several important circuits that allow the engine and boat electrical systems to work together. The harness includes connections for the rectifier charging circuit, which links to the starter solenoid to convert AC power from the stator into DC battery charging current.

It also carries the ignition key switch circuit, enabling proper start and stop control from the helm. The starter trigger wire activates the solenoid when the key switch is turned to start, while the primer circuit wire supports the fuel enrichment system used during cold starts.

Additional wires provide connections for the tachometer signal, which sends engine RPM data to the dashboard, along with the temperature sender circuit and temperature warning horn circuit that alert the operator if the engine begins to overheat.

Together, these circuits allow the Mercury outboard’s electrical system to communicate properly with the boat’s controls and instrumentation.

Restoring Reliability to Legacy Mercury Electrical Systems

Over time, engine harnesses are exposed to heat, vibration, moisture, and corrosion. Aging connectors or damaged wiring can lead to intermittent ignition issues, charging problems, or gauge malfunctions.

Replacing an older Mercury female 8-pin harness such as 87266, 96220, or 6220A4 with a new engine-side harness helps restore electrical reliability and ensures the ignition and charging systems function as intended.

For owners maintaining classic Mercury 2-stroke V6 outboards—including Black Max, XR series, Pro Max, and Mercury Racing engines—upgrading the engine-side harness is often one of the best preventative electrical service steps available.
