The Mercury EFI Fuel Pressure Regulator is one of the most important components in the fuel delivery system of Mercury's legendary V6 EFI two-stroke outboards. Its function is to maintain consistent fuel pressure across the injectors while returning excess fuel to the Vapor Separator Tank (VST).

Proper fuel pressure is critical because the EFI system relies on stable pressure to deliver accurate fuel volume throughout the entire RPM range.

Buckshot Racing #77 offers both genuine Mercury OEM regulator versions used on Mercury V6 EFI engines. While the regulators perform the same basic function, they are designed for different fuel system configurations and should not be interchanged without confirming which VST system is installed on the engine.

Why Fuel Pressure Regulation Matters

Electronic fuel injection systems depend on stable fuel pressure to maintain proper air-fuel ratios. The regulator continuously adjusts fuel return flow to maintain the correct pressure supplied to the injectors.

As regulators age, internal diaphragms and sealing surfaces can wear from years of exposure to fuel, heat, vibration, and pressure cycling. A failing regulator can contribute to hard starting, rough idle, inconsistent throttle response, poor fuel economy, rich or lean running conditions, and reduced overall engine performance.

When troubleshooting EFI fuel system problems, the fuel pressure regulator should always be inspected alongside fuel pumps, injectors, filters, hoses, and VST components.

Mercury OEM 15027 — External VST Fuel Pump Systems

The Mercury OEM 15027 Fuel Pressure Regulator is used on Mercury EFI systems equipped with external VST fuel pumps.

Common applications include Mercury 2.0 Liter V6 EFI engines such as the 150 HP EFI, 175 HP EFI, and 200 HP EFI, along with select 2.5 Liter Pro Max and Super Magnum applications, including the 150 Pro Max, 200 EFI Pro Max, and 225 EFI Pro Max.

These engines utilize an externally mounted electric fuel pump feeding the Vapor Separator Tank and require the proper regulator calibration to maintain correct fuel pressure throughout the operating range.

Mercury OEM 8140122 — Internal VST Fuel Pump Systems

The Mercury OEM 8140122 Fuel Pressure Regulator is used on Mercury EFI systems equipped with internal VST fuel pumps.

Common applications include Mercury 150 XRi, 175 XRi, and 200 XRi engines, along with various 150 HP EFI, 175 HP EFI, 200 HP EFI, and selected 150 Pro Max, 200 Pro Max, and 225 Pro Max models utilizing the later internal-pump VST design.

In these systems, the electric fuel pump is located inside the Vapor Separator Tank assembly, requiring the later-style regulator configuration.

Selecting the Correct Regulator

Mercury produced both external-pump and internal-pump EFI systems during overlapping production years. Because of this, engine horsepower alone should not be used to determine regulator selection.

The most reliable method is to identify whether the engine is equipped with an external VST fuel pump (OEM 15027) or an internal VST fuel pump (OEM 8140122) before ordering.

This simple verification helps ensure proper fuel pressure control and eliminates compatibility issues during installation.

Service Recommendations

Fuel pressure regulators are often overlooked during routine maintenance because they are hidden within the fuel system. However, regulators operate continuously whenever the engine is running and are exposed to constant fuel flow and pressure fluctuations.

Many Mercury EFI technicians replace aging regulators during major fuel system service, injector cleaning, VST rebuilding, or EFI restoration projects as preventative maintenance. Maintaining proper fuel pressure is one of the keys to preserving EFI reliability and performance.

The genuine Mercury OEM 15027 and 8140122 fuel pressure regulators remain critical service components for maintaining proper fuel delivery in Mercury V6 EFI outboards.

Whether your engine utilizes an external VST fuel pump or an internal VST fuel pump configuration, proper regulator operation helps ensure stable fuel pressure, reliable injector performance, and consistent engine operation.

For owners of Mercury EFI, XRi, Pro Max, and Super Magnum outboards, maintaining the fuel system with genuine Mercury components helps preserve the reliability and performance that made these EFI two-stroke engines some of the most respected platforms ever produced by Mercury Marine.
