The Buckshot Racing #77 Marine Hydraulic Helm Steering Fluid is formulated for conventional manual marine hydraulic steering systems where a low-viscosity, anti-wear, corrosion-resistant steering fluid in the MIL-PRF-5606 / H5606-type oil family is specified.
Designed for performance boats, bass boats, offshore boats, outboard drag race boats, and other hydraulically steered vessels, Buckshot Racing #77 helm oil is intended as a premium alternative to fluids such as Mercury / Quicksilver 858078Q01 in systems that permit the same hydraulic-fluid-oil specification.
Mercury identifies 858078Q01 as a non-power hydraulic helm fluid meeting MIL Spec H5606G and specifically lists conventional SeaStar-by-Teleflex steering among its intended applications.
Built for Marine Hydraulic Steering
A hydraulic steering system depends on incompressible fluid to transmit helm movement through the steering hoses to the cylinder. Unlike ordinary hydraulic oil, steering fluid must remain stable through temperature changes while protecting precision helm valves, cylinder bores, seals, and internal components.
Buckshot Racing #77 Hydraulic Helm Steering Fluid is designed for this type of service, with emphasis on stable viscosity, wear protection, corrosion resistance, oxidation resistance, and controlled foaming.
These properties are particularly important in high-performance applications. Air entrainment or foaming can create a soft or spongy helm, additional steering-wheel travel, and inconsistent steering response—conditions that should never be ignored on a fast boat.
Buckshot Racing #77 helm oil is intended for compatible systems requiring this same class of marine hydraulic steering fluid.
This makes it appropriate for many traditional hydraulic helm-and-cylinder installations used behind Mercury, Mariner, and other outboards where the steering-system manufacturer permits a 5606-type fluid.
SeaStar Compatibility – Important Technical Note
Many older SeaStar systems and marine steering-fluid cross-reference charts are associated with MIL-PRF-5606-type hydraulic fluids. Dometic recommends SeaStar Hydraulic Steering Fluid HA5430H only for normal service in current SeaStar systems.
Dometic states that MIL-PRF-5606H-equivalent fluid may be used, followed by a complete flush with genuine SeaStar fluid.
Uflex and Other Hydraulic Steering Systems
The same rule applies to Uflex and other marine hydraulic steering manufacturers.
If the helm manufacturer permits a 5606-type hydraulic steering fluid oil, Buckshot Racing #77 Marine Hydraulic Helm Fluid is suitable for that specification class.
Do not select steering fluid by engine horsepower or boat brand. Select it by the helm and steering-cylinder manufacturer's fluid requirement.
Wide-Mouth Quart Bottle
One practical feature of the Buckshot Racing #77 steering fluid is the large-mouth quart bottle.
The wider opening makes the bottle easier to work with during steering-system filling and bleeding, especially when attaching a reusable fill hose or optional helm-fill kit.
A full quart also gives the installer enough fluid for routine service, top-off work, and many common fill-and-purge procedures without handling several smaller containers.
Actual fluid volume required depends on the helm, hose length, cylinder configuration, and whether the system has multiple steering stations or cylinders.
Optional Hydraulic Helm Fill Kit
Customers can add an optional steering-system fill kit when purchasing a quart of Buckshot Racing #77 hydraulic helm oil.
The fill kit is designed to connect the fluid bottle to a compatible helm fill port so the steering system can be filled and purged with less mess and less chance of drawing air into the helm.
This is particularly useful when installing new steering hoses, replacing a cylinder, changing a helm pump, or performing a complete fluid flush.
During bleeding, keep fluid available at the helm so the pump does not draw air back into the system. SeaStar's own service procedures emphasize keeping fluid visible in the fill tube during the purge process to prevent additional air from entering.
Why Air-Free Steering Matters
Air is compressible; hydraulic oil is effectively not. When air becomes trapped in the system, the steering wheel can feel soft or spongy and may require additional movement before the cylinder responds.
On a high-performance boat, that lost motion becomes especially noticeable.
After filling or servicing a steering system, turn the wheel through the complete steering range and verify that the cylinder responds immediately in both directions. Recheck the fluid level and inspect every fitting, hose connection and cylinder seal for leakage.
Not for Mercury Electric Power Steering
Buckshot Racing #77 Hydraulic Helm Steering Fluid is intended for compatible manual hydraulic helm systems.
It should not automatically be used in Mercury Verado electric power steering, Joystick Piloting for Outboards, Axius or Zeus steering/actuator systems.
Mercury specifies a separate 0W-30 synthetic power-steering fluid, such as 858077Q01 / 858077K01, for those applications and explicitly states that those fluids are not intended for conventional non-power hydraulic steering systems.
Buckshot Racing #77 Tech Tip
When replacing or changing hydraulic steering fluid, identify the fluid already in the system before mixing products.
If the system contains unknown, contaminated, or incorrect fluid, the best practice is to flush the system completely and refill it with the fluid specified for the helm manufacturer.
Also inspect the fluid during service. Cloudiness, metallic debris, water contamination, or unusually dark fluid can indicate a larger steering-system problem.
Repeatedly topping off the reservoir is not normal. If the level drops, find and repair the leak.
Designed for High-Performance Marine Use
The Buckshot Racing #77 Marine Hydraulic Helm Steering Fluid gives performance-boat owners a professional steering-fluid option for compatible conventional hydraulic systems.
Its application is centered around 5606-type marine steering systems, including many Mercury/Quicksilver 858078Q01-type installations, with a practical wide-mouth quart bottle and an optional fill-and-bleed kit available for easier service.
For performance boating, steering deserves the same attention as the engine, lower unit, and propeller. Correct fluid, proper bleeding, and leak-free components are essential to maintaining precise, predictable control.
