These jets are used for precise fuel and air metering on Mercury V6 two-stroke engines, including many 2.0L and 2.4L carbureted outboards and modified 2.5L performance engines using compatible carburetors.

The important difference is the carburetor family. WH carburetors use replaceable idle air jets, while WMV and WMH carburetors use adjustable idle mixture screws rather than removable idle air jets. The same style of calibrated brass jet can also be used as a main fuel jet in WH, WMV, and WMH carburetors where the correct size and application are specified.

WH-Series Idle Air Jet Tuning

On Mercury WH carburetors, the idle air jet controls the amount of air entering the idle circuit. A larger idle air jet allows more air into the circuit and generally creates a leaner idle mixture. A smaller idle air jet generally creates a richer idle mixture.

Changing the WH idle air jet can help fine-tune idle quality, reduce excessive fuel loading, and improve throttle response when the engine combination requires a different calibration than stock.

This is especially useful on modified Mercury V6 engines with changes to compression, reeds, exhaust, port timing, or carburetor setup.

WMV and WMH Idle Adjustment

Mercury WMV and WMH carburetors do not use the same removable idle air jet system as the WH series. Instead, they use adjustable idle mixture screws to control low-speed mixture.

Because of this design difference, the replaceable jets offered for WMV and WMH carburetors are primarily used as main fuel jets, while idle tuning is handled through the carburetor’s mixture screws and synchronization procedure.

Main Jet Tuning

When used as a main fuel jet, a larger jet increases fuel flow and generally richens the mixture at higher throttle openings. A smaller main jet reduces fuel flow and produces a leaner mixture.

Main jets are commonly tuned on Mercury WH, WMV, and WMH carburetors for changes in engine setup, compression, fuel type, weather, altitude, and racing conditions.

A main jet that is too lean can quickly damage a two-stroke engine under sustained load, so jet changes should always be made in controlled steps.

River and Race Applications

These jet sizes are useful for Mercury V6 engines used in river running, drag racing, high-performance recreational boating, and modified race applications. WH-series engines can be tuned with both idle air jets and main fuel jets, while WMV and WMH carburetors use adjustable idle screws along with interchangeable main jets.

On modified engines, carburetor synchronization, ignition timing, fuel pressure, reeds and exhaust configuration should all be considered along with jet size.

Before changing jets, record the carburetor model, existing jet size, and exact jet location. Mercury used different jet calibrations across WH, WMV, and WMH carburetors, and some engine combinations may use different jet sizes between carburetors or cylinders.

For performance tuning, make one change at a time and verify engine condition under load. Piston wash, spark plug condition, engine temperature and other available tuning data should be evaluated together rather than relying on a single indicator.
