Mercury Marine and MerCruiser propulsion systems are renowned for their durability and performance. A vital component in these systems is the lower unit stud, a fastener that secures lower units, gearcases, sterndrives, and jet drives to the midsection.

The lower unit studs from Buckshot Racing #77 are compatible with a wide range of Mercury Marine, MerCruiser, Mercury Racing, Mariner, and Quicksilver systems.

They fit 2-stroke Mercury V6 Outboard engines, including V-135, V-150, V-175, and V-200 models (135–200 HP, 2.0L and 2.4L displacements), as well as performance motors like the XR2, XR4, XR6, Mercury Racing EFI series, Mercury 150, 200 Pro XS 2.5L, and Mercury Racing Offshore (ROS) engines.

For  Mercury Sterndrives, they are used in MerCruiser Bravo One, Bravo Two, and Bravo Three drives, typically paired with GM-based marine engines (4.3L, 5.0L, 5.7L, and 7.4L). These studs ensure secure fastening across these applications, supporting both recreational and high-performance boating.

Each stud is crafted to meet Mercury’s OEM standards. Every stud has a 7/16"-14 coarse thread on one end, a 7/16"-20 fine thread on the other, and is available in merc-specific shank lengths tailored to various applications.

The 2.060-inch lower unit stud, originally Mercury part number 16-57920 3 and now replaced by 8M0133358, has an overall length of 2.060 inches. This stud is designed to provide secure fastening for mid-range horsepower applications, ensuring stability and alignment in demanding marine environments.

The 2.750-inch lower unit stud, previously Mercury part number 16-56295 and superseded by 8M0120687, measures 2.750 inches in length. Its length makes it suitable for a wide range of applications, offering versatility for both standard and performance-oriented marine systems.

The 2.812-inch lower unit stud, originally Mercury part number 16-59579 and replaced by 8M2016987, has a total length of 2.812 inches. Its slightly longer length enhances stability, making it ideal for 2.5 Liter Sportmasters and 2.4 Liter CLEs operating under challenging conditions.

The 3.125-inch lower unit stud, previously Mercury part number 16-78638 2 and now replaced by 8M2016987, measures 3.125 inches in end-to-end length. The long stud, usually in the front of the gearcase, it provides enhanced structural support, particularly for high-torque, performance-oriented setups.

The 3.688-inch lower unit stud, originally Mercury part number 16-18978 3, is now available from Buckshot Racing as the longest or Extra Long 3-11/16" Mounting Stud. This extra-long variant offers increased engagement depth and clamping force, making it ideal for high-load or custom performance marine applications where additional reach is critical.

Lower unit studs are critical to the operation of Mercury Marine’s outboard and sterndrive systems. They securely anchor the lower unit, gearcase, and jetdrive, ensuring alignment and stability under torque and harsh marine conditions.

Loose, corroded, galled, or incorrect studs can cause the lower unit or gearcase to loosen, potentially leading to severe damage, such as broken midsections, cavitation plates, propellers, driveshafts, or lower units.

The lower unit studs from Buckshot Racing #77 offer a dependable solution for maintaining Mercury outboards and MerCruiser sterndrives.  Adhering to Mercury’s original specifications, they ensure proper fitment and durability across various marine applications.

By using these studs, boaters and racers can mitigate the risks associated with faulty fasteners, maintain system alignment and performance in diverse conditions.
