A metal-caged roller bearing provides improved cage strength and better durability in demanding high-speed operation. The cage keeps the rollers properly spaced and controlled as the rod rotates around the crankpin. Better roller control helps reduce friction, heat, and instability during long high-RPM pulls, offshore running, drag passes, and hard acceleration.

When to Use These Bearings
Metal-caged rod bearings are especially recommended when rebuilding a Mercury V6 that will see high RPM, heavy load, long wide-open-throttle operation, or racing use. They are also a smart upgrade when refreshing an older powerhead where the original bearings are unknown, discolored, worn, contaminated, or have been exposed to previous piston failure debris.
For normal fishing and recreational use, bearing condition still matters. Even a stock Mercury 150 HP or 200 HP two-stroke depends on clean, properly lubricated rod bearings. For performance engines such as a 225 Pro Max, 260 EFI, 280 ROS, or 300 Drag, bearing selection becomes even more critical because crankshaft speed and load increase rapidly with RPM.
Installation Notes for Engine Builders
Connecting rod bearings should always be installed during a clean, controlled powerhead rebuild. Inspect the crankshaft journals, connecting rod big ends, rod bolts, cages, rollers, thrust surfaces, and crankcase sealing surfaces before final assembly.
Any pitting, bluing, scoring, brinelling, or metal transfer on the crankpin or rod surface must be addressed before new bearings are installed.

If a Mercury V6 is being rebuilt for performance use, do not reuse questionable rod bearings to save money. A failed rod bearing can destroy a crankshaft, rod, block, piston, and cylinder in seconds.
Always clean the crankcase thoroughly after any previous failure, inspect every oil path and bearing surface, and build the engine with parts suited to the RPM and load it will actually see.
