Choosing the correct cable type is important for performance:
Gen I cables feature a barrel-shaped stopper at the control box end, secured with a jam nut or grommet, making them ideal for legacy models with earlier Mercury control boxes.
Gen II cables utilize a slotted connection with a built-in slot retainer, allowing faster installation and a secure fit without additional hardware. They are designed for newer Mercury outboards with 4000 series controls.
Both Gen I and Gen II cables share the same engine-side connection, ensuring universal compatibility with Mercury engines.
Gen I cables are compatible with Mercury outboard models from 1965 to present, offering broad versatility for a wide range of marine setups.

How to measure your control cable lengths?
1) For outboards measure: A + B + 3 feet = cable length, round it up.
2) For sterndrives and inboards: A + B = cable length, round it up.
