The anode on the Mercury V6 outboard protects the motor from galvanic corrosion and also provides stability to the transom brackets.
 
The Buckshot Racing #77 replacement Mercury V6 Race Anode Plate Bracket Transom Bracket are made of a metal alloy that is more reactive to corrosion than the metal parts of the engine. They are "sacrificial" in that they slowly erode instead of the outboard but are also strong to support the mid-section.
