This is the latest version of the Mercury Racing Trigger (OEM part numbers 96455 A10 / A11) for  1976-1999 Merc / Mariner V6 2-stroke outboards.

 

This part is intended for use on the 135, Black Max, 150, XR2, XR4, XR6, 175, 200 HP, XRi, 225 ProMax, 260 HP, SST-120, SST-140, S3000 and 300 Drag outboard motors and also works well on the 280 ROS with CDI ignition.

Includes one (1) brand-new (new stock) Mercury OEM Trigger

 

The Mercury OEM Trigger 96455 (A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, A9, A10 superseded to A11) is a critical outboard ignition part of the CDI (Capacitor Discharge Ignition) system in high-performance 2-stroke outboard engines.

 

In this CDI ignition system, the trigger generates a signal indicating the crankshaft's position (based on 3 coils in the trigger and 2 reverse polarity magnets in the flywheel center hub) and sends it to the switch boxes.

 

In this process, these switch boxes control the discharge of energy stored in a capacitor, releasing it to the ignition coils at the precise moment to fire the spark plugs.

 

This setup allows for efficient and rapid ignition timing, enhancing the engine's performance, especially at high RPMs.

 

One way to detect an issue with your trigger is by checking if the firing pairs are firing as expected (see chart above).
