Mercury's V6 two-stroke outboards earned a reputation for durability and performance, powering everything from bass boats to offshore race boats. Whether installed on a Black Max, 150 HP, 175 HP, 200HP, XRi, XR2, XR4, XR6, 225 HP Pro Max, 245 Carb, 2.4 Bridgeport, S3000, or Mercury Racing 260 EFI, accurate ignition timing is essential for reliability and maximum power.
The Mercury OEM Ignition Trigger 96455A11 and 96455A10 is the latest production version of one of Mercury's most important ignition components.
Designed for 1976–1999 Mercury and Mariner 2.0L, 2.4L, and 2.5L V6 outboards, this genuine OEM trigger provides precise crankshaft position signals to the switch boxes, ensuring accurate spark timing across all six cylinders. It replaces numerous earlier Mercury trigger assemblies while maintaining factory fit and performance.
How the Trigger Works
Mounted beneath the flywheel, the trigger uses three pickup coils that interact with dual reverse-polarity flywheel magnets. As the crankshaft rotates, the trigger generates timing signals that are sent to the switch boxes. The switch boxes then discharge capacitor energy to the ignition coils, firing each cylinder at precisely the right moment.
Because each pickup coil controls a firing pair of cylinders, trigger accuracy is critical from idle through high-RPM operation. Mercury Racing engines operating well above 7,000 RPM rely on consistent trigger output for smooth performance and dependable ignition timing.
Common Failure Symptoms
Years of heat, vibration, and wiring fatigue can eventually cause trigger failures. Common symptoms include intermittent misfires, rough idle, difficult starting, cylinder drop-out, loss of RPM, or a complete no-start condition. Many failures occur only after the engine reaches operating temperature, making diagnosis especially challenging.
Since trigger problems often resemble failed stators or switch boxes, testing trigger output should be part of every Mercury ignition diagnosis before replacing other components.
Fits Numerous Mercury Marine, Mercury Racing, Mariner, and Super Mag V6 Models
The 96455A11 and 96455A10 fit many Mercury and Mariner 2.0L, 2.4L, and 2.5L V6 two-stroke outboards from 1976 through 1999.
Applications include numerous 150 HP, 175 HP, 200 HP, 220 HP, 225 HP, 240 HP, 245 HP, and 260 HP engines, including the Black Max, XR2, XR4, XR6, Magnum II, Laser EFI, XRi, Offshore, Pro Max, Bridgeport EFI, Formula Race, SST-120, SST-140, 245 Carb, 260 EFI, 2.5 EFI ROS, S3000, 260 ROS, and 300 Drag Mercury Racing models.
OEM Cross References
Current Mercury production replaces several earlier trigger assemblies, including 96455A6, 96454, 68162A1, 68162A5, and 68162A8. It also replaces many aftermarket versions, including CDI Electronics 134-6456, while restoring original Mercury electrical specifications and ignition performance.
Why Choose a Genuine Mercury Trigger?
High-performance outboards demand precise ignition timing, especially at elevated engine speeds. Genuine Mercury triggers are manufactured to meet factory specifications for coil resistance, signal output, insulation quality, and connector durability. Installing an OEM trigger helps eliminate compatibility concerns while restoring dependable spark timing and throttle response.
Whenever the flywheel is removed, inspect the stator, switch box wiring, grounds, flywheel magnets, and trigger harness for damage or deterioration. After installation, always verify ignition timing according to the Mercury service manual to ensure proper engine operation
.
Whether you're restoring a classic Black Max, rebuilding an XR6, servicing a Pro Max, or maintaining a Mercury Racing 260 EFI or 300 Drag, the Mercury OEM Ignition Trigger 96455A11 and 96455A10 delivers the factory performance and reliability these legendary V6 two-stroke outboards were engineered to provide.
