Mercury used several different powerhead base and exhaust plate gasket patterns across the typical V6 two-stroke family. The three main standard-production styles covered here are 75909, 997761, and 991764.

These gaskets are not interchangeable. Mercury changed the exhaust opening, cooling-water passages, and overall gasket layout as the V6 block, adapter plate, and exhaust system evolved.

The easiest way to separate them is by generation: 75909 is the earliest style, 997761 is the intermediate style, and 991764 is the later production V6 style.

Many Mercury high-performance and racing engines use a different base-plate gasket altogether. For those applications, Buckshot Racing #77 offers the Mercury 823142 Powerhead Base Plate Gasket, manufactured from AFM gasket material.

Do not assume one of the three standard gaskets below is correct for a Bridgeport, Pro Max, 245 Carb, 260 EFI, 280 ROS, 300 Drag, S3000, or other modified Mercury Racing application.

1) Mercury 75909 – Earliest 2.0L & 2.4L V6 Base Gasket

The Mercury 75909 is the earliest of these three standard V6 base gaskets with the largest non-rectangular exhaust opening.

It is associated with first-generation Mercury V6 two-strokes, including early 1976–1977 2.0L V-175 / 1750 applications and selected early 2.4L V6 configurations, including some 225 HP applications.

This gasket is identified by the large, non-rectangular exhaust opening and the corresponding early cooling-passage layout.

The 75909 should only be used where the block, adapter plate, and exhaust plate are designed for this original pattern. It should not be substituted with 997761 or 991764 unless the surrounding hardware has also been changed to the later configuration.

2) Mercury 997761 – Intermediate 2.0L & 2.4L V6 Base Gasket

The Mercury 997761 is the intermediate V6 base-gasket design and is easily recognized by its large rectangular exhaust opening.

It is used on selected Mercury and Mariner 135, 150, 175, and 200 HP V6 engines, including certain XR2 and XR4 applications and some 2.4L performance configurations.

The 997761 uses a different exhaust and water-passage arrangement from the earlier 75909 and represents the next stage in Mercury’s V6 exhaust-plate and cooling-system development.

Because Mercury overlapped engine families and hardware changes, two engines with the same horsepower may still require different base gaskets. A 150 or 175 HP engine, for example, may use either 997761 or 991764 depending on the block, adapter plate, exhaust plate, and serial range.

For Bridgeport and other high-performance 2.4L engines, verify the exact base-plate configuration before ordering. Many of these applications use the Mercury 823142 AFM gasket instead of a standard production gasket.

3) Mercury 991764 – Later 2.0L & 2.5L V6 Base Gasket

The Mercury 991764 is the later-style standard V6 powerhead base gasket.

It is commonly found on later 135, 150, 175, and 200 HP Mercury and Mariner V6 applications, including later 2.0L engines and selected 2.5L combinations using the corresponding later exhaust-plate design.

Compared with 75909 and 997761, the 991764 uses a revised layout for the exhaust opening and cooling-water transfer passages.

This is one of the more common later-production V6 base gaskets, but it should still be identified by the actual engine hardware rather than horsepower alone.

4) High-Performance & Mercury Racing Applications

Many Mercury Racing and high-performance V6 powerheads use a different base-plate gasket than the standard 75909, 997761, or 991764.

For compatible race and performance applications, Buckshot Racing #77 offers the Mercury 823142 Powerhead Base Plate Gasket in AFM material.

This gasket is used on selected high-performance combinations where the exhaust plate, adapter plate, and cooling layout differ from standard fishing or production midsections.

If you are working on a Bridgeport, Pro Max, 245 Carb, 260 EFI, 280 ROS, 300 Drag, S3000, or other modified Mercury V6, or any powerhead with a lightweight race cowling, this is most likley the gasket for your application.

Why the Correct Base Gasket Matters

The powerhead base gasket seals the joint between the cylinder block and the exhaust plate or adapter plate.

It also aligns the engine’s cooling-water and exhaust passages. Installing the wrong gasket can partially block a water passage, misalign an exhaust opening, or create a sealing problem. In some cases, the powerhead may still bolt down normally even though the internal passages are incorrect.

That can lead to cooling problems, exhaust leakage, or poor sealing, which is why gasket selection should always be based on the actual engine configuration.

Buckshot Racing #77 Tech Tip

On older Mercury V6 engines, never assume the powerhead, midsection, and adapter plate are all original to the same engine.

Many performance boats have been rebuilt, repowered, or converted with parts from different model years and engine families.

If the original gasket is available, compare it directly with the replacement and verify the exhaust opening, water passages, and bolt-hole pattern before installation. Do not trim, enlarge, or modify a gasket to make the wrong pattern fit.
