The Mercury 93886 connecting rod bolt is used with the earlier bottom-guided connecting rod assemblies found in many Mercury and Mariner 2.0L and 2.4L V6 two-stroke engines.

Buckshot Racing #77 supplies these bolts as a complete 12-piece kit, providing two new rod bolts for each of the engine’s six connecting rods.

The 93886 is a 5/16-28 x .875-inch connecting rod screw and is commonly identified as Mercury 10-93886. A common aftermarket cross-reference is Sierra 18-1342.

These bolts are designed for the earlier bottom-guided rod system and should not be confused with rod bolts used in later top-guided Mercury V6 connecting rods.

Mercury 2.0L & 2.4L Applications

The Mercury 93886 rod bolt is used on selected classic 2.0L and 2.4L Mercury V6 two-stroke powerheads equipped with the correct bottom-guided connecting rod assembly.

Common applications include selected Mercury V-135, V-150, V-1500, 150 XR2, V-150 Work, V-175, 175 XRi, 175 Magnum, V-200, 200 XRi, 220 Laser, XR4 / Magnum II, SST-120 and S2000 engines.

Corresponding Mariner V6 models using the same bottom-guided rod design may also use this bolt.

Mercury made running changes to connecting rods and crankshaft assemblies over the years, so horsepower alone should not be used to identify the correct bolt. The actual connecting rod design installed in the powerhead should be verified before ordering.

Bottom-Guided Connecting Rod Design

Mercury’s earlier V6 powerheads used a bottom-guided connecting rod arrangement, where rod location and side clearance are controlled at the crankshaft end of the assembly.

Later Mercury V6 engines transitioned to top-guided rods and different connecting rod bolts. These later bolts may use different threads, torque specifications, and tightening procedures.

The 93886 is specifically associated with compatible bottom-guided rods using the 5/16-28 fine-thread fastener.

Mercury 93886 Specifications

Mercury Part Number: 93886 / 10-93886

Cross Reference: 18-1342

Bolt Size: 5/16-28 x .875"

Application: Bottom-guided Mercury V6 connecting rods

Quantity: 12 bolts per kit

Torque Specification: 30 ft-lb

For the Mercury 93886 rod bolt, tighten to 30 ft-lb. Do not add an additional 1/4 turn.

The additional torque-angle procedure used with some later Mercury rod bolts does not apply to the 93886 fastener.

Replace Rod Bolts each Rebuild

Mercury Marine service practice calls for connecting rod bolts to be treated as one-time-use critical fasteners. When a powerhead is disassembled and the connecting rod caps are removed, new rod bolts should be installed during reassembly.

Rod bolts operate under extreme cyclic loading. At high engine speed, the bolt repeatedly carries the forces created as the piston and connecting rod change direction thousands of times per minute. A used bolt may appear visually acceptable while still having an unknown fatigue and loading history.

For this reason, rod bolts should be replaced during every powerhead rebuild or whenever a connecting rod cap has been removed. Reusing old rod bolts is not recommended.

A complete V6 requires 12 rod bolts, which is why the Buckshot Racing #77 kit includes a full matched replacement set.

Buckshot Racing #77 Rebuild Tech Tip

Connecting rod assembly is one of the most critical procedures inside a Mercury V6 powerhead. Before installation, clean and inspect the rod threads, crankshaft journals, and rod-cap mating surfaces carefully.

Each connecting rod cap must remain matched to its original rod. The fractured or precision-machined mating surfaces must be clean and correctly aligned before the bolts are tightened.

Never substitute a later rod bolt simply because it appears physically similar. Mercury used different rod designs, bolt threads, and torque procedures across the 2.0L, 2.4L, and 2.5L V6 families.

Install new 93886 bolts, tighten evenly to the specified 30 ft-lb, and do not apply the later additional 1/4-turn procedure.

The Buckshot Racing #77 Mercury 93886 Connecting Rod Bolt Kit includes 12 new 5/16-28 x .875-inch rod bolts for compatible bottom-guided Mercury and Mariner 2.0L and 2.4L V6 two-stroke powerheads.

It provides the complete rod-bolt set needed for a six-cylinder rebuild while maintaining the correct fastener size and tightening procedure for this earlier Mercury connecting rod design.
