The Mercury V6 Skeg Guard Kit, manufactured by Sterndrive Engineering, Inc., is designed for compatible Mercury Marine and Mariner 2.0L, 2.4L, and 2.5L V6 two-stroke outboards equipped with a 4-3/4-inch diameter gearcase.
Made from marine-grade stainless steel, the guard fits over the original skeg to add protection against rocks, submerged debris, shallow-water contact, ramp damage, and normal abrasion. It can also be installed over certain already damaged skegs, making it a practical option when the remaining skeg and gear housing are still structurally sound.
The complete kit includes the stainless skeg guard, installation fasteners, mounting sleeves, and Loctite threadlocker, so the hardware needed for installation is supplied with the guard.
This model is specifically for compatible 4-3/4" Mercury and Mariner V6 gearcases. It does not fit 4-1/4" diameter gearcases and does not fit Mercury SportMaster lower units.

Can Cover an Already Damaged Skeg
One of the primary advantages of this skeg guard is its ability to cover certain existing skeg damage.
Minor chips, worn lower edges, and partially damaged skegs may be candidates for a stainless guard rather than immediate welding or complete gearcase replacement. The guard wraps around the remaining skeg and provides a new stainless outer surface that helps protect the original aluminum underneath.
This should not be considered a substitute for structural repair if the skeg is cracked into the gear housing, severely bent, loose, or damaged to the point that the lower unit itself may be compromised.
If the engine has suffered a significant lower-unit impact, inspect the complete gearcase before installation.
Fits Mercury & Mariner 2.0L, 2.4L & 2.5L V6 Applications
This skeg guard kit is intended for compatible Mercury and Mariner V6 two-stroke lower units used behind many classic 2.0L, 2.4L and 2.5L engines.
Typical applications include many 135 HP, 150 HP, 175 HP, 200 HP and selected 225 HP Mercury and Mariner outboards when the actual lower unit uses the correct 4-3/4-inch gearcase and matching skeg profile.
Common engine families may include Black Max, XR2, XR4, XR6, XRi, Laser EFI, Magnum and Pro Max-style applications using the larger conventional V6 gearcase.
Because older Mercury performance engines are often fitted with replacement or swapped lower units, fitment should always be confirmed from the actual gearcase, not the engine model or cowl decal alone.
4-3/4" Gearcase Fitment Is Critical
The key fitment requirement is the 4-3/4-inch gearcase diameter. This skeg guard is intended for compatible large-diameter Mercury and Mariner V6 lower units. It is not designed for the smaller 4-1/4-inch Mercury gearcase and is not compatible with Mercury SportMaster lower units.
That distinction matters because Mercury used several different gearcase families across similar horsepower and displacement ranges.
A 2.5L Mercury V6, for example, might be equipped with a standard fishing gearcase, CLE, SportMaster or another lower-unit configuration. The correct skeg guard must match the gearcase that is actually on the boat.
Why Marine-Grade Stainless Steel
The original Mercury skeg is aluminum, which keeps the gearcase relatively light but leaves the bottom edge exposed to impact and abrasion.
A marine-grade stainless steel skeg guard adds a more abrasion-resistant outer surface around that area. It is especially useful for boats operated in shallow water, rocky lakes, rivers, areas with submerged timber, or around ramps where the skeg may occasionally contact the bottom.
The stainless construction also provides excellent corrosion resistance in freshwater and saltwater environments.
Protection Without Replacing the Lower Unit
A skeg guard can be useful both before and after damage occurs. Installed on an undamaged skeg, it provides an additional sacrificial layer against normal contact and abrasion. Installed over a structurally sound but damaged skeg, it can restore a cleaner profile and add protection to the remaining aluminum.
This can be a practical alternative when the damage does not justify welding, extensive machining or complete gearcase replacement.
The condition of the original skeg still matters. The guard relies on the remaining structure beneath it, so heavily fractured or severely bent skegs should be repaired properly before installation.
Installation & Lower Unit Inspection
Before installing the skeg guard, thoroughly clean the existing skeg and inspect the surrounding gearcase.
Look for cracks at the base of the skeg, severe bends, damaged propeller blades, abnormal propeller-shaft movement, bearing-carrier damage or signs that the gearcase took a harder impact than the skeg alone suggests.
