The Billet Aluminum Timing Indicator from Buckshot Racing #77 replaces Mercury Racing OEM part number 848465. The purpose of this component is to establish a rigid, stable, and repeatable reference index for ignition timing calibration on the Mercury V6 two-stroke outboard platform.
This custom timing pointer is CNC-machined from anodized billet aluminum. It mounts using the starter bracket bolt and reads the top of all 9-amp and 16-amp Mercury flywheels, including stock steel flywheels, lightweight aluminum OEM flywheels, and aftermarket billet flywheels from OX Performance and PPE. Once indexed with an outboard race dial indicator from Buckshot Racing #77, the pointer edge maintains one static reference line against the Buckshot Super Timing Magnet or any degree-reference of choice.
This timing mark fits all 1976–2005 Mercury Racing V6 two-stroke outboards—2.0 liter, 2.4 liter, and 2.5 liter engines running 9-amp and 16-amp charging systems. It applies to the V-135, V-140, V-150, V-175, and V-200 engines, and it applies to the XR2 and XR4 models as well. It is also correct for the high-output competition engines: 225 Pro Max, 225 Super Mag, Mercury Racing 260 EFI in all induction configurations, 280 ROS, SST-120, 300 Drag, and S3000.
When the reference index is precise, the operator knows that when the timing light freezes the pointer on the degree wheel, the number being read is true crankshaft position. A pointer that migrates or changes shape moves the reference baseline. On two-stroke outboard race engines with high specific output, a one or two-degree ignition lead error is enough to change BSFC, EGT, piston crown temperature, detonation margin, and ultimately engine durability.
The Buckshot Racing #77 billet timing indicator is fully compatible with the Buckshot Racing Super Timing Magnet system and the Buckshot #77 Degree Wheel Decals. Used as a system, the pointer always locks to the same magnetic TDC reference and a clear printed degree scale across all cylinders.
For field tuning, dyno calibration, or lake testing on Mercury Outboards, this creates a closed-geometry ignition timing system: rigid mechanical pointer plus magnetic TDC trigger point plus a consistent degree wheel. This significantly reduces the stack-up error that exists with mixed OEM and aftermarket pointer systems.
For any Mercury V6 two-stroke ignition calibration workflow—whether carbureted fishing motors or full Mercury Racing 245 Carb, 260 EFI, 280 ROS, SST-120, 300 Drag, or S3000 race engines—accurate mechanical referencing is the foundation. Replacing less-stable indicators with an anodized billet aluminum indicator eliminates a major source of drift and uncertainty in timing setup on high-performance Mercury outboard engines.
