When installing bolts, you can lubricate the threads and underside of the head with 2-stroke oil. You can also snug the bolts in a box pattern, starting in the center. The cylinder head, exhaust plate, and crankcase bolts on the Mercury 2.5 Liter 200 HP should torqued in a series of passes, increasing in torque from just tight to final torque. The pattern is circular, starting in the center and moving outward toward each end. If the head bolts aren't torqued properly, the head gasket may fail. This can lead to several issues, including Loss of compression, Mixing of oil and coolant, Exhaust gases in the cooling channels or oil ways, Cylinder head erosion, and Cylinder head overheating and warping. Here are some steps to check the torq on your cylinder head bolts on a Mercury 2-stroke outboard motor block: Run the outboard for 30 minutes to an hour to warm the block Let the block cool for two hours When the engine is cold, follow the torque sequence and tighten each bolt individually Loosen the bolt a quarter turn and retorque it to 30 ft-lbs.

Submerged Engine (Fresh Water) 1. Recover the engine as quickly as possible. If submerged while running, beware of the possibility of internal engine damage has increased. 2. Remove cowling and inspect for visible damage. 3. Flush the exterior of the outboard with fresh water to remove mud, weeds, etc. See if the engine rotates freely, don't attempt to start the engine if sand has entered the powerhead, as the powerhead will be severely damaged. Disassemble the powerhead if necessary to clean components. 4. Remove spark plugs and get as much water as possible out of the powerhead. Most water can be eliminated by placing the engine in a horizontal position (with spark plug holes down) and rotating the flywheel. 5. Pour alcohol into carburetor throats (alcohol will absorb water). Again rotate the flywheel. 6. Turn the engine over, pour alcohol into the spark plug openings, and rotate the flywheel. 7. Turn the engine over (place spark plug openings down) and pour engine oil into the throat of carburetors while rotating the flywheel to distribute oil throughout the crankcase. 8. Again turn the engine over and pour approximately one teaspoon of engine oil into each spark plug opening. Again rotate the flywheel to distribute oil in cylinders. 9. Remove and clean carburetors and fuel pump assembly. 10. Dry all wiring and electrical components using compressed air. 11. Disassemble the engine starter motor and dry the brush contacts, armature, and other corrodible parts. 12. Reinstall spark plugs, carburetors, and fuel pump. 13. Attempt to start the engine, using a fresh fuel source. If the engine starts, it should be run for at least one hour to eliminate any water in the engine. 14. If the engine fails to start, determine the cause (fuel, electrical or mechanical). 15. The engine should be run within 2 hours after recovery of the outboard from water, or serious internal damage may occur. If unable to start the engine in this period, disassemble the engine and clean all parts. 16. Apply 2-stroke oil as soon as possible.

Rice Lake in Ontario, Canada has a variety of recreational activities, including high-performance boating, including a few STV River Rockets. The lake is known for fishing bass and walleye, and has a variety of fast boats, while only slow motor boats are available for rentals are available. The Great South Bay is a 151-square-mile shallow saltwater bay in New York State. It's located between Long Island and Fire Island and is protected from the Atlantic Ocean by barrier islands. The bay is 45 miles long, with an average depth of 4 feet 3 inches and a maximum depth of 20 feet. Markham Park in Sunrise, Florida has a 26-acre lake that has two boat ramps that provide access to the Everglades Conservation Area. The park's lakes are good for boating, fishing, and using personal watercraft. The park also has a boat rental facility that offers kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards so watch out for these markers. Great Sacandaga Lake is a popular hot post for boating including the annual hot boat get-together called the Rondack Romp. The lake has four boat launches and is also known for its bass and trout. The lake is located in the southeastern part of the Adirondack Park Preserve. Bordering towns include Broadalbin, Mayfield, Northville, Edinburg, West Day, Conklingville, Batchellerville, Fayville, and Fish House. Jasper, Tennessee is home to Marion County Park which has a two-lane boat ramp and is located on the shores of the Tennessee River. Some say it's a great place for boating, skiing, and camping but for those who know, this is legacy home to outdoor drag racing. It's connected to the Tennessee River's main navigable channel which is 652 miles long and starts a mile above Knoxville, Tennessee. Just south of Havasu City Arizona lies the 20-mile-long Parker Strip, which starts at the world's deepest dam and ends at Lake Moovalaya, just before Big River. Parker is home to outboard world speed record, the Parker Enduro as well as local drag and SCSC circle boat races. On any Sunday, you'll find blown V8 v-drives and jet boats, blasting past the bars and putting on a show. There are many places for power boating at Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri, including boat clubs, boat dealers, and boat rentals. It's known for the Netflix series Orarks but more importantly, it's home to the LOTO Powerfest, Sanctioned by the Offshore Power Boat Association, this race features the world's fastest and most powerful boats in the world. In the last few years, they have been joined by the F1 Powerboat Championship tunnel hulls. Camp Mack Marina & RV Resort in Lake Wales, Florida offers a chain of lakes and a variety of boating activities including pontoon boats, fishing boats, and airboat tours in search of Alligators. But for us it's most famous for the Scream and Fly events and just above the River Ranch on the fast and narrow Kissimmee River. If you ain't fast and doing a pass, your sitting on Bull Shit Hill with the airboats. Haulover Inlet is a man-made channel in Miami-Dade County, Florida. It connects the Atlantic Ocean to Biscayne Bay. The inlet was created in 1925 to provide boaters with easier access to the ocean. It's a heavily trafficked area. The inlet is dangerous for boaters because of: Strong currents, Sandbars, Rock walls, Gusty onshore winds, and Ocean waves. Powerboat thrill seekers aim to impress the popular YouTube Channels (Wavy Boats and Boats vs Haulover) and often catch air or bust their necks. Blarney Island is located on Grass Lake in Antioch, Illinois. It's a mile off-shore and is part of the Chain O'Lakes, the busiest inland waterway in the country. Blarney Island offers a variety of boating activities, including Boat races, PWC races, Shuttle boats, and Party packages. Blarney Island is also the only place in the world where high-performance drag boat racing takes place every Thursday evening. The drag boat races have been held since 1978. The Otonabee River in Ontario, Canada offers boating and fishing. The river has a free boat launch and public beach at Squirrel Creek Conservation Area. There are also opportunities for boater camping along the river. But most importantly, it's quite enough and home to many high performance boaters looking to lay down a GPS number. Pottsburg Creek in Jacksonville, Florida is used by smaller boats and jet skis. The creek is narrow and has limited vertical clearance due to the Beach Boulevard bridge which makes it a quiet place for speed runs. The creek starts near a retention pond behind the old WJXX studios and it flows into the Arlington River, which then empties into the St. Johns River. Every August the Indian River in Michigan fills up with stock outboard racers from across the country to compete in the world’s toughest hydro and runabout boat races. Top O' Boat Racers travel 87 miles over the course of 2 days through the Inland Waterway. Spectators line the shores and from their homes to watch various points of this exhilarating, high-speed spectacle. Lake Koshkonong is a 10,595-acre lake that's good for boating, swimming, fishing, and watersports. It has a maximum depth of 7 feet with public boat landings and public beaches. It's known for high-speed boat traffic during the season as well as a high-speed boat race called Thunder on the Lake. Lake Havasu is a man-made reservoir on the Colorado River. It was created by the construction of Parker Dam between 1934 and 1938. It hosts the Formula 1 Powerboat Championship series and Desert Storm, considered the largest performance boating event in the Western United States as Havasu's Main Street fills up with a multi-million dollar presentation of extraordinary super-charged racing vessels from the world's top offshore boat-builders. Key West is an island in the Florida Keys and the southernmost point of the United States. It's made up of the island of Key West, plus parts of Dredgers Key, Fleming Key, Sunset Key, and the northern part of Stock Island. Key West has a land area of about 6 square miles. It's home to the Keys Island Runners (KIR), a grassroots group of high-performance boaters.

Ignition timing for a 2-stroke engine is determined by the height of the piston before top dead center (TDC). The ignition timing is indicated by the distance from TDC, not the angle of the crankshaft. TDC is the position of a piston when it is at the very top of its stroke. The elusive part is caused by piston dwell, where there are a number of rotational degrees, before and after TDC; making it difficult to measure piston height differences, even with the most precise dial indicator. You should still use a dial indicator, but to address this issue, we measure two points and split the difference to find TDC: Insert the dial indicator into a spark plug adapter. Rotate the engine clockwise until the dial indicator drops to a certain reading. Mark that reading on the flywheel. Rotate the engine counterclockwise until the dial indicator reaches the same reading. Mark that reading on the flywheel. TDC is halfway between the two marks. On a Mercury 2-stroke V6 outboard, we typically use 25 degrees (roughly 150 thousand of an inch) before and after TDC and indicate 25 degrees on the Buckshot Racing Super Timing Wheels (Magnet for the stock OEM and Light Race Flywheel or Decal for the Power Performance Engineering (PPE) Flywheel with Titanium flexplate) to find and compare the most accurate timing across all 6 cylinders. Timing varies from cylinder to cylinder (based on multiple factors), flywheel to flywheel (based on the placement of magnets), and from powerhead to powerhead (based on compression, fuel octane, rich or lean). Please call with any questions. Advancing ignition timing increases high-end power and decreases low-end power. It also helps the spark get past the ignition delay and run at peak power. Retarding ignition timing causes the spark plug to fire later in the compression stroke, reducing power. This is because the cylinder pressure won't reach its max until the piston is already headed back down on the Power Stroke. Overly advanced timing can reduce power and make the engine overheat. It can also cause detonation, which can lead to a hole melted in the piston.

Lake X is a 1,440-acre lake in central Florida that Mercury Marine founder Carl Kiekhaefer purchased in 1957. The lake is surrounded by 10,000 acres of forest and swamp. Kiekhaefer named the lake "Lake X" because it was close enough to his Orlando headquarters for convenience, but far enough away to keep it secret from competitors. Mercury used Lake X for product development and publicity stunts. For example, in 1957, Mercury ran boats around a 5.8-mile course for 50,000 miles, 24 hours a day. Mercury built seawalls, boat launches, work buildings, and a six-room "motel" at Lake X. The crew slept in trailers and ate in tents. They were under strict orders not to reveal anything about their activities at the lake. Mercury Marine closed and sold Lake X to Kenneth Kirchman in 1984. Kirchman turned the property into a 10,426-acre nature preserve called the Kenneth Kirchman Foundation. The foundation's mission is to educate the public about Florida's ecology and wildlife. Mercury Racing later leased the Lake from the Kirchman Foundation until 2004. It was closed until 2017 when Mercury and the Kirchman foundation made arrangement to reopen the facility to start using Lake X for product testing once again. Most recently tunnel boat drivers who own APEX 200 Competition Outboards were invited for a private test session at the lake.

First, you must run the course in a test or practice session to collect a baseline of GPS location data. Reeds are used in two-stroke outboards to control the fuel-air mixture. A bad reed can denigrate your boat's high performance, or worse, cause you to chase non-existent fuel and ignition problems. As both composite and steel reeds age, they can become chipped, broken, or bent, and may not do their job properly. A broken OEM steel reed can tear up the internals of your motor. If a reed valve is malfunctioning, the fuel/air charge will not be effectively drawn into the crankcase. This can cause your powerhead to have difficulty starting, idle poorly, and/or not run at the top end. Reed valves should be checked regularly in high-performance boating applications for proper sealing and lack of chipped material or cracks and changed for peak performance in racing applications after just a few uses. There is no set time on when to replace reeds when pleasure boating, but the life of the reed depends on how many RPMs you turn and the actual type of reed material. If there is a gap between the reeds and the reed cage or if they are frayed/cracked, then replace them right away.
